SELF CARE: Sanctify Yourself
When you hear the first few notes drip from Jamila's lips, you stop for a second and think "Wait. I've heard her before". Let me jog your memory for you:
She opens Chance The Rapper's gospel-tinged track, 'Blessings' from his Grammy-winning album Coloring Book. This time, she's blessing her own track, 'Holy'. She sings, "I'm not lonely, I'm alone and I'm holy by my own". An ode to self-love, this track is a testament to the sacred and necessary act.
The video does the same, showing that "ordinary daily rituals in bedrooms and bathtubs feel magical" (via NME's article, 'Jamila Woods shares bewitching video for ‘Holy’)
As we enter the second week of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'll be exploring the different ways people heal and care for themselves whether or not they are receiving professional treatment.
Check out Jamila's video below. How do you practice self-care? Tell me in the comments
